Appearance

They have a feathered area that's gray from the crown to the nape. There's a line over the coverts, a patch over the eye, and a long plume behind the coverts that are pure white. The head, neck, the primaries, greater coverts, the alula, and the legs and toes are black. The bill is greenish at the base, yellowish in the center, and pinkish at the tip.

Habitat

Steppe habitats, meadows, feathery grass, damp marshes, and swamps during feeding.

Range

Northwestern Africa, to Japan, and western Europe.

Diet

Plants, grass seeds, insects, and grains.

Reproduction

The eggs are laid between May to the end of June. They are laid in intervals of 24 to 28 hours. They are incubated by both sexes. The incubation period is 27-29 days.

General Behavior

These are the smallest cranes and they make a low-pitched call.
